This is the fork in the road for most people new to Medicare. Both are good options, they just work differently. Here's how to tell which one fits you.
Medicare Advantage (Part C)
- Bundles your coverage into one plan, often with a low or $0 monthly premium.
- Usually includes prescription drugs plus extras like dental, vision, and hearing.
- Uses a network of doctors and hospitals, and includes a yearly out-of-pocket maximum for protection.
- Great fit if you like lower monthly costs and your doctors are in-network.
Medicare Supplement (Medigap)
- Pairs with Original Medicare and fills in the deductibles and coinsurance it leaves behind.
- Higher monthly premium, but very predictable costs when you actually need care.
- Lets you see any doctor or specialist nationwide who accepts Medicare, with no networks or referrals.
- Great fit if you travel, want maximum freedom, or prefer steady, predictable bills.
How to actually choose
It comes down to four questions: Which doctors do you want to keep? Do you travel often? Do you prefer low monthly cost or predictable costs when you're sick? And what prescriptions do you take? Answer those honestly and the right path usually becomes clear.
